Slimming down is not an easy thing to do especially when you are surrounded by good foods that are oftentimes loaded with calories. Calories are not that bad actually because our body needs calories for energy without calories we would end up feeling lethargic and too tired to do anything. However, calories only pose a problem when it starts to pile up inside your body because you don’t do enough physical activity to burn it and if this cycle continues weight gain is expected. Unfortunately, if you continue to ignore this trend then expect excessive weight gain in the long run. It is typical for people to not do anything until the problem blows right up in front of them and in this case when the excess weight becomes undeniably obvious.

Hence, people plunge into the crash diet mode. When they realize that they are overweight the first thing that comes to their mind is to lost weight immediately and because of this they are ready to believe whatever tips are given to them even when it is rather radical and possibly life threatening in the long run. So before you take a dive you might want to spend enough time segregating the facts from the fiction when it comes to weight loss. Keep in mind that these fictitious claims can actually hinder you from achieving your desired weight and maintaining that weight.

First off it is true that the number of calories you ingest will eventually affect your weight because one pound is equal to 3500 calories. So imagine if you ingest more than 3500 calories you will probably be gaining more than a pound everyday. This is the very reason why to effectively lose weight you must reduce your calorie intake. Weight gain only happens when the calorie intake goes way beyond than what the body needs. In addition to that caloric requirements will surely vary from one individual to another especially when there are other factors like age, height and gender, to be considered.

Due to this fact it is important that you eat a balanced diet, the kind of diet that provides you with adequate calories while helping you lose weight at the same time.

Second eating slow can actually help you trim down. According to research that the average time for the brain to be able to send signals of satiation is 20 minutes. So if you eat slow you are giving the brain enough time to tell your stomach that it is already full so you don’t get to eat to much because by the time you interpreted the signal you just consumed your portion and nothing more.

Third trick your body so that it will keep on speeding up your metabolism. This technique can only be done through calorie shifting which means that you have to ingest foods that have varying calorie levels, contain different kinds of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. You can do this every few days or as often as you want. The best thing about this trick is that you get different kinds of foods so you don’t end up bored with your diet and by doing this the body tends to think that the same amount of food will be ingested the next day so the body jump starts the metabolism making it work faster.

Fourth there is truth in the claim that high fiber foods will certainly help one lose weight and maintain an ideal weight. High fiber founds like fruits and vegetables are low in calories but the dietary fiber help keeps you full longer thus you don’t have to eat more than your fill.

When there is truth there is fallacy and the following are some fictitious claims about weight loss.

Careful with labels. Some food labels that says low in fat or zero fat doesn’t necessarily mean that it doesn’t contain calories. In fact these foods may contain more calories simply because it may contain large amounts of sugar. So when you go shopping check the ingredient label for sugar which can also go by the term of sucrose, fructose, glucose and even hydrolysed starch.

Carbohydrates have to be avoided completely. This practice is very wrong because when you do this you rob the body of its preferred source for energy. This may help you lose weight quickly but the effect is only temporary because by the time you resume your normal diet you put on all the weight you’ve lost and even more. The best thing to do is not to eliminate carbohydrates but ingesting an adequate amount of it.

Skipping meals. Though this technique might seem to be very effective but the effects is only good for a short span of time. The problem with skipping meals is that you get to eat more. For example if you skip breakfast there is a tendency that you will eat more than your usually serving during lunch. Skipping meals is not actually that efficient. To lose weight you don’t skip meals instead four to five small meals the whole day.
