Can Viagra be used for other purposes?

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Viagra is not just used to treat erectile dysfunction; it is also used in the treatment of various other conditions. Read on for more information about this:

In the treatment of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension

During the initial phases of its development, Pfizer (the manufacturer) intended that Viagra be used in the treatment of angina and pulmonary arterial hypertension. These conditions occur due to a blockage in the chest arteries that increases blood pressure and results in a heart attack or stroke. Sildenafil, the active ingredient present in Viagra, is a PDE5 inhibitor that dilates and unblocks the arteries and reduces blood pressure. Later tests revealed that sildenafil also helped to resolve the symptoms of erectile dysfunction in men.

Used by Sportspersons

It may come as a real surprise, but there have been revelations of professionals using Viagra to boost their performance on the field. Sildenafil dilates the blood vessels, improves blood circulation and gives quick oxygen to the muscles, this is believed to give an unfair advantage to athletes sports persons using this drug. Ongoing commissioned research by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) will prove whether this is indeed true or just a rumor. If sildenafil does improve athletic performance, it will join the list of banned substances. In the meantime, professional sports administrators are not planning to ban Viagra or other PDE5 inhibitors.

In the Treatment of Altitude Sickness

As you go higher above sea level, you will find it increasingly difficult to breathe. This is because the air grows thinner as you go upwards and your lungs have to work harder to absorb oxygen from the atmosphere. Research has shown that sildenafil doses can effectively treat high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) – a life threatening condition that requires immediate treatment – by rapidly improving your lungs’ capacity to absorb oxygen from the atmosphere.

You can buy Viagra in the UK only with a doctor’s prescription.
