<p>It is during pregnancy and lactation in which a woman needs to nourish not only for her self but for the growing baby as well. Do you know how to get the right nutrients while breast feeding your child? Trying to design a diet through the recommended daily allowance is probably overwhelming for the mother. According to health experts it is often easy to get the right nutrients for the mother and the baby if one thinks of daily diet base on food portions. According to experts a mother nursing a baby needs about 400 to 800 more calories in order to properly provide enough food for the growing baby.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.lookhealthy.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/women_1.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1567" title="women_1" src="http://www.lookhealthy.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/women_1.jpg" alt="" width="255" height="335" /></a>There are different nutrients and food sources which are particularly important for mothers who are nursing a baby. These include calcium, protein, grains, yellow and orange fruits, citrus and vitamin C, greens, and iron rich foods.</p>
<p>One of the minerals with utmost importance for nursing mothers is calcium. This mineral is also important during pregnancy. Calcium is used to make milk during breast feeding. It is important to note that if a mother doesn’t have enough calcium to provide for the growing baby during pregnancy, calcium is the usually pulled out from the bone, one of the possible causes why mother’s are predisposed to osteoporosis later in life. Consuming enough calcium during pregnancy and while breast feeding will most often help avoid loss of bone density in the future. During breast feeding, it is wise to consume five servings more of calcium rich foods and an extra serving for every additional baby.</p>
<p>Protein is said to be our body’s building blocks. This means than a developing baby requires much of this nutrient in order to grow healthy and strong. Some food servings which provide good amount of protein for a breast-feeding mother include 1 ¾ cups low-fat yogurt, 3 ounces of Swiss cheese, 3 ounces of meat, fish or poultry, and 5-6 ounces of tofu among others.</p>
<p>Mothers who are breast-feeding her baby requires enough energy and adding grains to a mother’s diet will provide the energy necessary. Grains also supply fiber which may help ease up constipation. While nursing, a mother may need 6 servings of any of the following: 1 corn or bran muffin, 2 rice cakes, ½ cup pasta, 6 crackers, and 1.2 cup beans.</p>
<p>Finally, to complete the necessary nutrients any lactating mother needs, food products like yellow and orange fruits are required including vegetables. <p>As you probably know, most Americans were thinner when we sat down to home cooked meals. Now, we barely glance at or taste what we are eating, since we are usually either driving, working at our desks, or in front of the TV. Research suggests that our culture of quick consumption, along with poor food choices, is the reason why our waistlines keep increasing. Chances are, if you sit down at a table, you may not eat the whole burger and fries, but if you do, you’ll most likely eat at a much slower, relaxed pace, allowing your body and brain the time to savor the food and experience the act of eating.  We are all rushed and must strive to gain balance in our lives. Making time for meals is an important, yet often overlooked, aspect of healthy eating.</p>
<p>Eat mindfully. Establishing a mind-body connection while eating will improve your awareness and satisfaction of your meal. Research shows, cultures that take time to sit and eat with others have less obesity. If you look at your food, and take the time to really taste it, you will be more aware of what and how much you are actually eating. We’ve all been there: finished off that whole bag of chips or that pint of ice cream while watching a TV marathon of our favorite show. We were eating, but our mind wasn’t part of the equation. We were consuming mindlessly.</p>
<p>Eating mindfully allows the body and the brain to synchronize, sending messages that you are full. When you are distracted or stressed, you eat quickly, and the stomach doesn’t have time to send the message to the brain that you are full, resulting in overeating. Even if you only have a half-hour lunch break, try to make the time to sit down, away from your desk and all distractions, and really embrace your meal. Be aware of how lucky you are to have this moment to relax and eat. Eating slower and with more consciousness may also improve digestion and relieve any digestive issues such as gas and bloating.</p>

Leptin, which is made in stored fat tissues, sends the message that you are full and prevents you from overeating. All three of these vital hormones work synergistically to create either a balanced or chaotic metabolism.</p>
<p><strong>Hormones</strong></p>
<p>When sugar levels rise after a meal, the pancreas secretes insulin in order to capture the sugar. Sometimes the normal amount of insulin is not enough to move the glucose into cells, because the cells become &#8220;resistant&#8221; to the insulin. The pancreas must then produce more insulin in order to stabilize sugar levels.</p>
<p>Ghrelin is the primary hunger hormone that signals when you need food in order to meet your caloric requirements. However, when you see or smell food, you may want to eat even though you are not hungry, serving as a survival skill to keep you going until your next meal. Insulin works to regulate and balance the amount of glucose in the body, causing it to spike and then drop. <p>Metabolic syndrome is characterized by hypertension, elevated glucose levels and insulin resistance. Understanding how much sugar and carbohydrates we consume is vital to maintain a healthy metabolism. Sometimes called pre-diabetes, metabolic syndrome is a group of several risk factors that mark the development of type 2 diabetes, which is the most prevalent and preventable form of the disease. Some of the symptoms include excessive fat around the abdomen, low HDL or “good” cholesterol and high LDL or “bad” cholesterol and triglycerides, inflammation, a tendency toward excessive clotting, high blood pressure, and insulin resistance.</p>
